One day one of my students walked in with a photograph that she wanted me to paint for a lesson. It was so unusual I thought she had photoshopped it. Imagine my startlement to discover it was a real landform in China -the Zhangye Danxia Geological Park! Being more in tune with an impressionistic approach than worrying over minute detail, I often find myself distilling the essential nature of the subject to a simpler arrangement of light, form and color.
